How to Read a Liquidation Heatmap

A liquidation heatmap visualizes where leveraged positions will be forcibly closed if price moves in an adverse direction. Long positions (traders who borrowed to buy) get liquidated when price falls below their liquidation threshold. Short positions (traders who borrowed to sell) get liquidated when price rises above their threshold.

Dense clusters of liquidations at certain price levels create self-reinforcing moves: as price approaches a liquidation cluster, cascading forced closures accelerate the move. Experienced traders call these "stop hunts" — when large players push price into liquidation zones to capture the order flow. Darker, wider bars in the heatmap indicate heavier liquidation density at that level.

The estimated bands shown are derived from current Open Interest and typical leverage ratios. For a broader market picture, combine with Funding Rates to understand whether longs or shorts are more exposed. Actual liquidation levels depend on individual position leverage — these are model estimates, not exchange-sourced data.
