Understanding Bitcoin Dominance

Bitcoin dominance (BTC.D) is the percentage of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization held by Bitcoin. When BTC.D is high and rising, it typically means capital is rotating into Bitcoin — often during risk-off periods or early bull markets when investors prefer the relative safety of BTC. When BTC.D falls, altcoins are gaining ground relative to Bitcoin, often signaling an "alt season" where smaller-cap coins outperform significantly. The BTC.PH Dominance Chart updates every 60 seconds using CoinGecko's global market data endpoint.

Historically, BTC dominance above 60% has coincided with bear markets and Bitcoin-led rallies. Below 40% has coincided with peak altcoin seasons. The 40–50% range is often a transitional "warming up" phase. Note that dominance can be distorted by the rise of stablecoins, which are technically included in total market cap.
